Merry Christmas and Enjoy!
A Christmas Tale
All of my good friends are going to be there; Clara, Lee, Jill, Susan and Christine. It is the orphanage’s Christmas party. As one of the main donors, Fran never missed celebrating Christmas with those kids. She knew the place very well, as she moved there after her parents died in a tragic car accident when she was only 3 years old. She grew up, moved out, got married, made a life for herself, but made a point of donating money every month and volunteering whenever she could.
I went to Carly Whitman Orphanage a lot with her. Three or four times a month, to be exact. I built very strong friendships, and learned a great deal during that time. It is going to be my 20th Christmas party there, and also my last one.
Next week, I will get married and move to Italy with my husband.
As I wait for my aunt to finish getting ready, I can’t help but wonder if I will ever get used to seeing those dear friends only through the Internet, and only talking to them on the phone… Staying isn’t an option, since my fiance Jack was offered his dream job in Italy to start next month. Saying goodbye was never an easy task for me. But I am leaving relieved that all of my friends are healthy and happy adults now. Even Jill, who didn’t say a word for 2 years when she first arrived at the orphanage. She turned out to be the funniest comedian I have ever known. She learned to laugh at her own difficulties, and now shares that with the people who still struggle with not having a traditional family.
Come to think of it, what is a traditional family? Mom, Dad, kids…an old grandpa sitting at the end of the table…a dog? What really matters is the feeling of trust and love people are bound by. That is what really makes them a family. Those kids are a family. They were when they lived at the orphanage, and still are. They are a part of my family, and I will take them in my heart to Europe, or anywhere else I go in this life.
As for Fran, I’ll be forever thankful to her for showing me that reality, and adopting me when I was dropped off at the orphanage at only 6 months old. My parents didn’t want me, but she did. She is family. She is my world…
